Real Results: Do At-Home Skincare Devices Really Work? Here’s the Science Behind SKINJOY’s Results

Are SKINJOY devices clinically tested or backed by science? This is a question we love getting, because it gives us a chance to talk about what sets SKINJOY apart.

Let’s start with this: while we’re not a clinical lab or research institute, we are incredibly serious about the science behind skincare. And our founder, Lika Joubert, brings a wealth of expertise to the table. As an award-winning somatologist with over 20 years in the beauty industry (including owning two professional salons), she’s seen what works, and what doesn’t, across thousands of faces and skin types.

So when she created SKINJOY, her goal wasn’t to launch just another beauty brand. It was to curate a range of high-performance tools and devices she’d feel proud to recommend to her own clients, friends, and family.

Curated by a Skin Expert, Not a Trend Chaser

Every SKINJOY device is selected based on a simple, but strict, checklist:

  • Does the technology have real scientific grounding?
  • Are the materials safe and effective for home use?
  • Can this device deliver visible, measurable skin improvements?
  • Would I use this on my own skin, or recommend it to my salon clients?

If the answer isn’t a resounding YES across the board, it doesn’t make it into the SKINJOY lineup.

The Science Behind the Tools

Each of our devices are based on established skincare technologies that are widely backed by scientific literature and used by dermatologists and aestheticians worldwide. Here’s a closer look:

LED Light Therapy (LUMO MASK & LUMO PEBBLE)

Backed by hundreds of peer-reviewed studies, LED light therapy has been shown to stimulate collagen production, calm inflammation, reduce acne-causing bacteria, and improve overall skin tone. Our devices use multiple LED wavelengths (red, blue, yellow, etc.) so you can tailor your treatment to your skin’s needs.

Microcurrent Stimulation (LUMO PEBBLE)

Microcurrent tech mimics the body’s natural electrical signals to help lift, tone and energise facial muscles — often referred to as a "workout for your face." Clinical trials have shown its ability to boost ATP (cellular energy), support lymphatic drainage, and improve facial contour over time.

Microneedling (LUMO WAND)

Our LUMO WAND Micro-Needling Device uses safe, shallow microneedles (0.25mm) for daily or weekly use. While in-salon microneedling penetrates deeper and requires numbing cream, our device offers a gentler way to encourage skin renewal, support product absorption, and boost glow without downtime or trauma.

Tested by Real People, Measured by Real Tech

We recently completed an 8-week in-house case study using a professional skin scanner to track the effects of our SKINJOY LUMO Mask. The results?

These weren’t just “I think my skin looks better” results. They were measured, visual, and backed by a scientific-grade imaging system. You can view the full case study HERE.

Expert-Curated. Community-Tested.

At SKINJOY, we combine science, professional know-how, and real-user feedback to deliver skincare tools that are equal parts clever, effective, and joyful.

We may not be running double-blind clinical trials in-house (yet!), but we are incredibly intentional about bringing science-led, safe, and smart beauty tech into everyday hands.

If you’re curious about a device or wondering if it’s right for your skin goals, pop us a message. Lika and the SKINJOY team love sharing their knowledge and helping you build a skincare ritual that actually works.
